Third Tri Exam

Hello Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors! You will need to answer these questions and send them in an email addressed to mrsbecksvoort (at) wmchs (dot) net. In the subject line of the email, please type your name and "Choir Exam". Here are the questions/topics for your exam:

1) Look up a You Tube video of a choir singing the piece "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down." Give the name of the choir, the ages/grades of the singers, and the size of the group. Then briefly give your impressions of their performance by rating the following factors: tone quality (breathy, rich, full, weak, etc.), diction (could you understand them?), and expression (did they sing with varied dynamics, and did their faces communicate what they were singing?).

2) Look up a You Tub video of a choir singing the piece "The Awakening," and answer the same questions as above.

3) What makes a choir "good"? Can a choir be "good" without having fun? Without meaning what they sing? This is an opinion question, but be sure to back up your statements with explanations.
4) Please go to the following link and complete the Third Tri Survey. It's fun and it won't take too long. Click here to take survey.

Thanks, everyone! If you have trouble, email me at the address above, Facebook-message me, or give me a call on my cell (616.218.0832). Now wear your SPF and get out there and enjoy your SUMMER! :-)

Trimester Enrichment Assignment

For your assignment, you'll be listening to two different choirs singing the same song--"O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen. All your answers should be posted in a email, which you need to send to mrsbecksvoort (at) wmchs (dot) net.

  1. Look up the English translation to the Latin text "O Magnum Mysterium," and post it in the email.
  2. Give me a brief biography of the composer Morten Lauridsen.
  3. Listen to the following choirs sing the piece:

  4. Write a short paragraph describing the difference in sound between the high school choir and the college choir.
  5. Write a short paragraph describing whether you like or dislike this piece (and why).
Thanks! When you've emailed me, I will reply to let you know I've received it. Remember that this is due by the end of the first trimester.
